Despite providing post-abortion care, Uganda’s government enforces strict laws against abortion, leaving many women with limited options. Doctors who provide care face stigma and ostracism in society, further complicating the issue. Activists, such as Primah Kwagala and Edith Sifuna, work to challenge these laws and provide safe access to health services.
International Safe Abortion Day serves as a platform for advocates to raise awareness about the dangers of unsafe abortion and promote reproductive rights. Grassroots initiatives, such as those led by Family Medical Point and the Uganda Network of Sex Worker-led Organizations, aim to educate vulnerable communities and provide support for those in need. Despite challenges from conservative leaders like First Lady Janet Museveni, activists continue to push for change and demand the right to safe abortion care for all women in Uganda.
