A deadly Israeli strike on a mosque turned shelter in Gaza’s Deir al-Balah has resulted in the death of 21 people, according to Gaza’s civil defence agency. The strike was targeted at the mosque because Israel claims Hamas was using it as a command and control center. Australian supporters of Palestine have taken to the streets in Sydney and Melbourne ahead of the anniversary of Hamas attacks last year. Despite efforts by New South Wales police to block the rally, an agreement was made allowing the event to proceed with an altered route.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres released a video message condemning the violence in the region and demanding the release of hostages. The US State Department evacuated 145 American citizens from Lebanon, warning others to be prepared for further deterioration in the situation.

Israeli airstrikes have continued in Lebanon and Gaza, with the Israeli military threatening retaliation against Iran for a missile attack. Iran has warned of even stronger retaliation, heightening tensions between the countries. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized French President Emmanuel Macron for calling for an arms embargo on Israel, while Macron’s office responded by affirming France’s friendship with Israel.

The President of Ireland condemned Israel’s demand for UN peacekeepers to leave their positions in southern Lebanon. The situation in the Middle East remains tense, with continued violence and threats of further escalation.
