Israeli military launched airstrikes on hundreds of targets in southern Lebanon in response to Hezbollah’s rocket attacks on Israel, escalating fears of a wider conflict. Lebanon-based Hezbollah claimed to have targeted an Israeli airbase near Haifa in retaliation for Israeli attacks on Lebanon.
Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant stated that Israel’s war with Hezbollah had entered a “new phase” and commended the Mossad intelligence agency for its actions in the region. Israel has closed its northern airspace in anticipation of further retaliation from Hezbollah.
The US and UN have warned of the dangers of further escalation, leading to airlines cancelling flights to Beirut. Israel has also continued its military actions in Gaza, leading to further casualties.
Hezbollah began targeting Israel in support of Hamas after October 7 and has warned that it will stop when the Gaza conflict ends. The ongoing violence has resulted in numerous casualties on both sides.
The US has advised American citizens in Lebanon to leave due to the unpredictable nature of the conflict. The situation in the region remains tense, with the potential for further violence and human suffering.
