Missouri remains persistent in their efforts to execute Marcellus Williams | KCUR

After 20 years on death row, Marcellus Williams in Missouri remains on death row despite evidence that suggests his innocence in a 1998 murder case. A plea deal that could have spared his life was blocked by the Missouri Supreme Court, leaving Williams facing the death penalty. An evidentiary hearing for his innocence case is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 28.

UMKC law professor Sean O’Brien discussed the history of the case with KCUR’s Steve Kraske on Up To Date. Listeners are encouraged to contact the show at news@kcur.org for more information. Updates and news can be found on KCUR’s Instagram and Facebook pages.

Kansas City Today, hosted by Brian Ellison and produced by Byron Love and KCUR Studios, is a platform helping to bring attention to Williams’ case. The show is edited by Madeline Fox, Gabe Rosenberg, and Lisa Rodriguez. Support for Kansas City Today and their efforts can be provided by becoming a KCUR member at kcur.org/donate.

Despite the evidence supporting Williams’ innocence and calls for a fair trial, the Missouri court’s decision to block the plea deal has left Williams in a precarious situation. With the upcoming evidentiary hearing, there is hope that justice will prevail and Williams will finally be exonerated.
