Canada introduces new 100% tariff on imports of Chinese-made electric vehicles

Canada announced on Monday that it will be imposing a 100% tariff on imports of Chinese-made electric vehicles, mirroring similar tariffs imposed by the United States. The move is in response to what Western governments believe are unfair subsidies given to the Chinese industry, giving them an advantage in the global marketplace. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement following a meeting with U.S. national security advisor Jake Sullivan.

In addition to the tariff on electric vehicles, Canada will also impose a 25% tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum. Trudeau stated that countries like China have unfairly benefited themselves in the global economy. Chinese officials have not yet responded to the tariffs.

The Chinese EV giant BYD has expressed interest in entering the Canadian market, with plans to do so next year. The announcement of tariffs is likely to be met with concerns by Chinese officials, as they work to recover their economy post-COVID-19. The United States has also imposed tariffs on Chinese goods, citing unfair practices.

Canada is also considering tariffs on Chinese batteries, battery parts, semiconductors, critical minerals, metals, and solar panels. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland stated that China’s intentional overcapacity and oversupply should not be allowed to harm the Canadian EV sector. Former Canadian ambassador to China, Guy Saint-Jacques, believes that Canada can expect retaliation from China in other industries.
