Babe Ruth’s Shirt Shatters Sports Memorabilia Auction Record in Baseball News

A shirt worn by baseball legend Babe Ruth during his final World Series in 1932 has set a new record for the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever auctioned, fetching $24.1 million after a weeks-long auction. The New York Yankee shirt went up for auction in July and saw a bidding war lasting over six hours, culminating in the record-breaking sale. The buyer has chosen to remain anonymous.

The prized item broke records within the first few days of the auction, attracting a bid of $13.3 million with experts estimating it could reach over $30 million. The previous record for the most expensive sports object sold at auction was $12.6 million, paid in 2022 for a baseball card of Mickey Mantle. The auction of both the Mantle card and a shirt worn by Michael Jordan in 2022 broke the symbolic $10 million mark for sports memorabilia.

The “called shot” shirt was worn by Ruth during a historic game against the Chicago Cubs in the 1932 World Series. Ruth famously pointed to the centre-field stands where he wanted to hit the ball and then hit a home run in that exact direction, leading the Yankees to victory in the game and the World Series.

Heritage Auctions director of sports, Chris Ivy, called the jersey “the most significant piece of American sports memorabilia ever offered at auction” and highlighted the myth and mystery surrounding Ruth’s “called shot”. The road shirt was given by Ruth to his golfing buddy in Florida around 1940 and remained in the family before being sold at auction for the first time in 2005. It was then consigned to Heritage for the record-breaking sale in 2024.
