The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has issued a statement blaming Israel for the assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Iran. The 57-nation bloc held an extraordinary meeting in Saudi Arabia, where they condemned the attack as a violation of Iran’s sovereignty and warned that it could lead to regional conflict. Saudi Arabia, as the host of the meeting, also expressed concern over the attack, calling it a blatant violation of Iran’s sovereignty.
Iran and Palestine, who called for the meeting, have accused Israel of Haniyeh’s assassination, although Israel has not confirmed or denied responsibility. Iran has vowed to retaliate, while the United States and other Western countries have been calling for de-escalation to avoid further escalation in the region.
The US State Department spokesperson emphasized the need for all parties involved to avoid escalating the conflict and work towards a ceasefire in Gaza. While the US initially blamed Hamas for the failure to reach an agreement, there are ongoing negotiations with both Hamas and Israel to achieve a lasting ceasefire and address the root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The Gambia’s Foreign Minister, who chairs the OIC, stressed the importance of humanitarian aid reaching those in need and working towards a sustainable political solution for peace and security in the region. The OIC, as the collective voice of the Muslim world, seeks to address the ongoing crises in the region and prevent further escalation of conflicts.
