In a rare move, Israel conducted a targeted strike on a Hezbollah commander in Beirut, Lebanon, on Tuesday. The strike was in response to a weekend rocket attack in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights that resulted in the deaths of 12 young people. The Israeli military claimed that the strike targeted the commander allegedly responsible for the attack, resulting in his death. However, Hezbollah did not immediately confirm the commander’s death.
The strike in Beirut killed at least one woman and wounded dozens of others, escalating tensions between Israel and the Lebanese paramilitary group. The Lebanese public health ministry reported that 68 people were injured, some seriously, and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned the attack, calling it a violation of international law and humanitarian law.
The strike was also criticized by officials from Iran and Syria, with Iran’s embassy in Lebanon labeling it as “sinful and cowardly.” The ongoing conflict between the IDF and Hezbollah has been intensifying over the past ten months, with near-daily exchanges of strikes. While the conflict had previously been kept at a level that would not escalate into full-scale war, the recent strike in Beirut has raised concerns about further escalation.
The international community has been urged to intervene and pressure Israel to stop its aggression, implement international resolutions, and prevent further civilian casualties. The situation remains tense as both sides continue to exchange attacks, raising concerns about the potential for further violence in the region.
