Trash balloon from North Korea found on South Korea president’s residence

North Korea has once again floated balloons filled with trash across the border into South Korea, with one landing near President Yoon Suk-yeol’s office in Seoul for the first time. Thankfully, the balloon did not contain any dangerous materials or cause any harm. This incident comes after North Korea launched its 10th round of balloon launches this year, following South Korea’s announcement to increase propaganda broadcasts along the border.

These balloons, which have been carrying items like cigarette butts, wastepaper, used batteries, and compost, have raised security concerns in South Korea due to the potential for hazardous materials to be included. Pyongyang has stated that these balloon launches are in response to activists in South Korea sending leaflets and USBs into their territory to undermine the regime of Kim Jong Un.

This recent escalation in tensions follows threats from Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, who warned of a “gruesome and dear price” to be paid by those behind the leaflet drops. North Korea has a history of reacting strongly to propaganda campaigns, such as destroying a South Korean liaison office in 2020 and firing at balloons launched by activists in 2014.

While the balloons have not caused any injuries or significant damage, South Korea remains on alert, urging residents to report any objects they find and refraining from touching them. The situation continues to highlight the delicate balance of relations between the two Koreas, with both sides engaging in provocative actions.
