Missouri House Speaker Finds Limited Support for Bounty Bill

House Speaker Jon Patterson of Missouri announced that there is little support in the House for a Senate bill that would introduce bounties for individuals without legal status in the country. Senate Bill 72, which includes harsh penalties such as life imprisonment without parole, is unlikely to pass the House. Patterson stated that House Republicans are focused on legal immigration and do not support the idea of bounties for reporting individuals without legal status. Democrats in the House also oppose the bill, with Rep. Bridget Walsh Moore calling it a step toward fascism. The bill has not yet been voted on in committee. Patterson emphasized that immigration is already being addressed at the federal level, referring to the Laken Riley Act signed by President Donald Trump. The River City Journalism Fund is supporting St. Louis Public Radio’s Statehouse internship, with Evy Lewis serving as the reporting intern. For more information about the fund, visit rcjf.org.
