Federal Grant to Provide Training for Rural Missouri Teachers in Middle School Classroom Management

Middle school teachers in rural Missouri now have access to specialized training to help manage challenging classroom behavior. The training focuses on keeping students engaged and participating effectively using the CHAMPS method – Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement, Participation, and Success. This method aims to prevent discipline issues by keeping students focused.

The program, used in classrooms nationwide for 30 years, is now being offered remotely to rural educators for the first time. The grant, totaling nearly $4 million, will fund the program for the next five years. Keith Herman, a Curators’ Distinguished Professor, is leading the initiative to see if the program can be successful in rural settings when delivered virtually.

Middle school is a critical time for students academically and developmentally, and the program aims to re-engage students in learning during this important stage. More information about the CHAMPS curriculum can be found on the program’s website.

This initiative is crucial for rural educators who often lack access to professional development opportunities due to isolation or distance. By providing this training remotely, educators can learn effective strategies to manage classroom behavior and keep students engaged in their learning.
