Missouri’s legislative leaders have been chosen by both parties following the recent election. Starting in January 2025, the Republican Party will have a supermajority in both the House of Representatives and Senate. For the Democrats, 14th District state Rep. Ashley Aune has been elected as floor leader for the minority caucus in the House, with state Sen. Doug Beck as minority floor leader in the Senate.
Republicans have selected Rep. Alex Riley as house majority leader, Rep. John Patterson as speaker, Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer as senate majority leader, and Sen. Cindy O’Laughlin as president pro tem, making her the first woman to hold the position. Aune expressed concern about potential extreme ideas from the majority party, particularly on issues like abortion and public safety, but she remains hopeful due to her positive relationship with Governor-elect Mike Kehoe.
Sen. Beck, serving as the Democratic minority leader in the Senate, acknowledges the challenges of being in the super minority but remains optimistic. He emphasizes the importance of trust and honesty in his work with Sen. O’Laughlin, the new president pro tem. Beck sees his new role as an opportunity to advance good causes for the people of Missouri. The upcoming term will undoubtedly bring forth a range of legislative priorities and challenges for both parties in the state.
