Woodhaven, a nonprofit in Columbia and Boone County, is celebrating its 60th anniversary by continuing to help people with disabilities achieve independence. With services such as workforce development, community connections, and housing assistance, Woodhaven aims to empower individuals to secure jobs and participate in activities tailored to their interests. Members like Angie Minner have benefited greatly from Woodhaven’s support, with programs like dance, ceramics, and horseback riding promoting personal growth and empowerment.
The organization’s CEO, Joy Sweeney, highlighted the importance of increasing residents’ autonomy and individual dignity. Woodhaven also offers residential services to improve accessibility and plans to open a new Workforce Development Center in December, providing enhanced service delivery through training programs starting in January. The center’s proximity to the main headquarters will make accessing services easier for individuals.
Woodhaven’s commitment to helping individuals thrive is evident in the positive impact their programs have had on members like Angie, whose mother noted the broad smile on her daughter’s face after returning from activities. With a focus on understanding and promoting autonomy, Woodhaven continues to make a difference in the lives of those with disabilities.
