In 1996, Michael Jordan’s father, James Jordan, was fatally shot during a botched robbery in North Carolina. Daniel Green and Larry Demery, both 18 at the time, were convicted of the murder. Retired judge Gregory Weeks, who presided over the trial, has petitioned the state’s parole commission to release Green, who is currently serving a life sentence. Details about the petition are confidential, and neither Weeks nor Michael Jordan have commented on the matter.
James Jordan was found dead in a South Carolina swamp days after the murder, and was identified through dental records. Green was found guilty of murder during the commission of a robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. Demery testified that Green was the one who shot and killed James Jordan. Demery pleaded guilty to several charges and also received a life sentence.
Green has maintained his innocence, claiming he did not kill James Jordan but did help dispose of the body. The parole commission will determine whether or not to grant Green’s release. It is unclear what factors prompted Weeks to petition for Green’s release after so many years. The case continues to be a tragic event associated with the Jordan family and has sparked renewed interest now that the convicted killer may be considered for release.
