Report Reveals Local Police Did Not Coordinate with Secret Service Regarding Trump Shooter’s Hiding Spot at Butler Rally

The Secret Service’s internal investigation report released on Friday revealed that the local police team responsible for the roof a shooter used to target ex-President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13 had not communicated with the Secret Service prior to the incident. The report cited bad planning and poor communication between agencies as the cause of the security lapse that allowed Thomas Crooks to shoot at Trump, resulting in the death of a bystander and injuries to others. The report found errors in local police entities requesting support from each other without informing the Secret Service, leading to a lack of coordination and awareness of security measures. The report mentioned that the Secret Service’s counter sniper asset team arrived in Butler after security plans had already been made by law enforcement organizations. Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe acknowledged the failures on July 13 and emphasized the importance of learning from the incident to prevent future security breaches. Some Secret Service officials have been placed on leave in response to the assassination attempt. Recommendations to leadership based on the report’s findings may be forthcoming. The report also attributed the security breach to a “high operational tempo” due to increased security demands for Vice President Kamala Harris and upcoming political events. Rowe praised an agent who recently fired at a potential assassin on a golf course where Trump was present, noting that the agent acted in accordance with training. Rowe also confirmed that the Secret Service did not deny security assets to the Trump campaign prior to the July rally in Butler.
