DirecTV loses access to ESPN networks, ABC, and Disney channels during peak sports events.

ESPN has been taken off the air on DirecTV during the U.S. Open tennis tournament and college football games for the second consecutive year due to a carriage dispute with Disney. The move has angered sports fans who expressed their frustration on social media. The U.S. Tennis Association also criticized the situation, expressing disappointment that fans were unable to watch the tournament. ABC-owned stations in major cities also went off DirecTV as a result of the dispute.

Last year, Disney had a similar issue with Spectrum, which was resolved just hours before the first Monday night NFL game. DirecTV claims that Disney is not being held accountable for their actions and is prioritizing profit over consumer satisfaction. Disney and ESPN executives have urged DirecTV to finalize a deal, but they are not willing to undervalue their programming.

The impasse reflects broader challenges in the TV industry with distributors and subscribers wanting more flexibility in choosing channels and frustrations with content appearing on direct-to-consumer platforms before traditional channels. DirecTV specifically pointed to the miniseries “Shogun” appearing on Hulu before FX. As a result of the dispute, all ESPN network channels and other Disney-owned channels like Freeform, FX, and National Geographic have gone dark on DirecTV.
