Some arrests were made for violent behavior and weapons offenses during the protests. The violence was fueled by false rumors that the suspect in a recent knife attack was a Muslim asylum-seeker. The Mayor of London issued a warning against spreading hatred and fear, and the police deployed thousands of officers to protect potential targets. The security operations in London mirrored those undertaken in other parts of the UK, where additional prison cells were made available and surveillance technology was utilized to identify suspects. The riots have become a major challenge for Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his center-left Labour Party, as the UK faces a cost-of-living crisis and high levels of child poverty. The protests have shown the division within British society between those supporting refugees and those opposed to immigration, with tensions running high amidst concerns of further violence.
