Missouri Governor Mike Parson signed Senate Bill 751 into law, allowing Missourians to access essential medications through the federal government’s 340B program. This program requires drugmakers participating in Medicaid to sell outpatient drugs at discounted prices to health care organizations caring for uninsured and low-income patients. The law aims to combat restrictions imposed by large pharmaceutical manufacturers, making it easier for patients to receive treatment closer to home.
Karen White, CEO of Missouri Highlands Health Center, emphasized the critical impact this legislation will have on women’s health care services in rural areas of the state. While pharmaceutical manufacturer Pfizer’s lobbyist, Drew Duncan, expressed support for the 340B program, he claimed that the discounts provided by manufacturers are not always passed on to patients.
Despite some opposition, the bill received strong bipartisan support in both the Senate and House. CEO of the Missouri Primary Care Association, Joe Perle, highlighted the positive effects of the law, stating that Missourians will now have access to more affordable prescriptions closer to home. The measure is expected to benefit rural and underserved areas, where local pharmacies will be crucial in providing sustained health care services.
