U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley posted a video showing the aftermath of the killing of Trump shooter Thomas Crooks, demanding answers and accountability for the July 13 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Crooks was shot and killed after firing at Trump, also killing one other person and wounding two others. The body camera video shows Crooks’ body on the rooftop where he fired from, and the presence of law enforcement agents alongside the body. There was blood visible near the shooter’s body in the video.
Grassley emphasized the need for detailed answers on security failures and transparency to bring accountability. It was mentioned in the video that a sniper had seen Crooks setting a backpack down but lost sight of him before the shooting. The U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned following the incident, taking full responsibility for the security lapse.
Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers in Congress have demanded answers about how Crooks was able to open fire at a former president. The Department of Homeland Security Office of the Inspector General has opened three reviews regarding the incident. Crooks’ motive remains unknown.
Pennsylvania State Police had identified Crooks as suspicious before the shooting, but he was not designated as a threat until seconds before he opened fire. As a result of the assassination attempt, Trump plans to no longer hold outdoor rallies and will instead hold indoor events.
