The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved federal disaster assistance for counties in southern Missouri that were affected by tornadoes, floods, and severe storms between May 19-27, 2024. President Joe Biden has authorized funding for residents in ten counties, including Barry, Butler, Carter, Howell, New Madrid, Ripley, Scott, Shannon, Stoddard, and Texas.
The assistance will provide support for home repairs, temporary housing, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to aid in recovery efforts in the affected areas. State and certain local governments, as well as some private nonprofit organizations, will also have access to federal funding to assist with emergency work and repair or replace damaged facilities in thirteen counties.
Community support for flood victims has been evident with reports of a local Walmart being cleared out as donations poured in to help those in need. The federal funding can also be used for statewide hazard mitigation measures on a cost-sharing basis to help prevent future disasters.
The announcement of federal disaster assistance comes as a relief to residents and businesses in the affected counties who have been struggling to recover from the devastation caused by the severe weather. The support from FEMA and President Biden is a crucial step towards helping these communities rebuild and recover from the recent natural disasters.
