A recent listeria outbreak linked to deli meats has resulted in dozens of people becoming ill and, tragically, some deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Nearly 30 individuals have been hospitalized across the U.S., with at least two fatalities reported due to the food poisoning outbreak. The CDC is urging caution when it comes to deli meats as they continue to investigate the source of the outbreak.
People who have fallen ill reported consuming sliced deli meats from grocery store delis, with turkey, liverwurst, and ham being specifically mentioned. Symptoms of listeria can include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal issues. Health officials advise that these symptoms can be more severe for individuals over 65 years old.
In response to the outbreak, one Springfield resident, Cindy Trujill, emphasizes the importance of taking preventative measures such as ensuring deli workers wear gloves and promptly storing deli meats in the refrigerator upon returning home. While the CDC works to identify the specific type of deli meat responsible for the outbreak, consumers are urged to be vigilant and take precautions when handling and consuming deli meats.
As the investigation continues, individuals are encouraged to report any concerns or issues related to the outbreak to the CDC. For any corrections or typos in this article, readers are asked to email digitalnews@ky3.com. Copyright 2024 KY3. All rights reserved.
