The Missouri Fraternal Order of Police has condemned a political advertisement from attorney general candidate Will Scharf, calling for its immediate removal. The advertisement, which aired on television, was criticized for politicizing the murder of Hermann Police Department Detective Sergeant Mason Griffith on March 12, 2023. The Missouri FOP executive board stated that the ad jeopardizes the prosecution and shows a lack of respect for Griffith’s family, who have already been through immense pain and trauma. The Fraternal Order of Police urged Scharf and the Defend Missouri PAC to remove the ad and issue a personal apology to the Griffith family.
In response to the backlash, the Scharf campaign has not yet provided a comment. Meanwhile, Missouri Governor Mike Parson has endorsed the incumbent, Andrew Bailey, for re-election as Missouri’s Attorney General. Scharf, who touts himself as a “champion for the MAGA movement” due to his past work as an attorney for former President Donald Trump, is facing criticism for the insensitive nature of the ad.
The Missouri Fraternal Order of Police’s strong denouncement of the political advertisement has sparked a debate about the ethics of using tragic events for political gain. The controversy surrounding the ad has put Scharf’s campaign under scrutiny and raised questions about the boundaries of political campaigning.
