Missouri’s primary election is right around the corner, with candidates for several statewide races working hard to fine-tune their campaign strategies before appearing on the ballot. One such race is for Missouri Secretary of State, currently held by Jay Ashcroft who is running for Missouri Governor.
As the chief elections official in Missouri, the Secretary of State oversees statewide elections, manages local verification of signatures for initiative petitions, and serves as a source of information for the state. The office also administers the State Archives and Missouri State Library, as well as handling business registration and notary appointments.
In the upcoming primary election on Aug 6, there are 12 candidates vying for the position of Missouri Secretary of State, including eight Republicans, three Democrats, and one Libertarian. Greene County Clerk Shane Schoeller, marketing expert Mike Carter, and Senator Mary Elizabeth Coleman are among the notable contenders for the role.
Schoeller, a Branson native, has a background in politics serving as Speaker Pro Tem and interim Speaker of the Missouri House of Representatives before becoming Greene County Clerk. He is focusing on election integrity, business resources, and protecting investors in his campaign.
Carter, a municipal judge and business law firm president, is campaigning for reform in petition initiatives and exploring ways to enhance funding for public libraries. He seeks to continue the work of current Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft if elected.
Coleman, a constitutional lawyer and Missouri Senator, emphasizes the importance of preventing illegal immigrants from voting in Missouri, showcasing her dedication to election integrity.
With a diverse range of candidates and priorities for the role, the primary election on August 6 will determine which candidates will move forward to the general election in November.
