Two people were killed and several others were injured when a suspected intoxicated driver crashed into a crowd celebrating the holiday at a park in New York City. The incident occurred at Corlears Hook Park in Manhattan, where a pickup truck drove through an intersection, onto the sidewalk, and struck nine people. Two victims were pronounced dead on arrival, two were in critical condition, three were in serious condition, and two were not seriously hurt. Mayor Eric Adams described the scene as a tragedy that occurred as families were enjoying the Fourth of July evening. Police Chief of Department Jeff Maddrey stated that the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol based on preliminary investigations, although testing is still underway to confirm this. Responding officers smelled alcohol on the driver, who was eventually removed from the vehicle by parkgoers and detained until first responders arrived. The driver, who was not identified at the news conference, was driving a Ford F-150 at a high speed in the park, hitting people who were out enjoying the evening. The incident has prompted authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the crash.
