Trump Labels Netanyahu’s Corruption Trial a ‘Witch Hunt,’ Demands Its Cancellation

President Donald Trump has labeled Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ongoing corruption trial a “witch hunt” and is calling for its immediate cancellation. In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his disapproval after learning that Netanyahu was summoned to court, asserting that the Prime Minister deserves better treatment and should be pardoned or have the trial stopped. Netanyahu faces serious charges, including fraud, breach of trust, and bribery in three cases dating back to 2020. Prosecutors allege he traded regulatory favors for positive media coverage and accepted valuable gifts, including cigars and champagne, from a Hollywood producer and an Australian billionaire.

As Israel’s longest-serving Prime Minister, Netanyahu has fervently denied the allegations, also characterizing them as a “witch hunt.” The trial is expected to continue for years, with a verdict not projected until at least 2026, providing Netanyahu the opportunity to appeal any ruling. Opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized Trump’s comments, arguing that foreign leaders should not interfere in the legal matters of an independent state.

Trump’s recent remarks contrast sharply with his earlier criticism of Israel and Iran regarding their ceasefire violations amid ongoing conflicts. He condemned both nations shortly after a temporary ceasefire followed a violent escalation that began with Israeli airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear program. Netanyahu has faced accusations of leveraging the Gaza war to delay his trial, citing security reasons as justification for postponements. The conflict intensified following the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides, as violence escalates in the region.
