Gun Control Advocate and Former U.S. Representative Carolyn McCarthy Has Passed Away

Former U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, a prominent advocate for gun control, passed away at the age of 81. Her death, announced recently, followed a significant political career that began after the 1993 Long Island Rail Road massacre, which resulted in her husband’s death and left her son, Kevin McCarthy, critically injured. Initially a Republican, McCarthy’s response to the tragedy transformed her into a leading voice for gun control, despite facing challenges from the National Rifle Association and other Second Amendment advocates.

In June 2013, McCarthy disclosed that she was undergoing treatment for lung cancer and later announced her retirement in January 2014. Her son reflected on her legacy, noting her commitment to turning personal grief into public service that positively impacted many lives. New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi honored McCarthy, acknowledging her fierce advocacy and leadership.

Known as the “gun lady” on Capitol Hill, McCarthy frequently appeared on national news following mass shootings, such as those at Columbine and Sandy Hook. She characterized gun violence as a “cancer in our society” and expressed her determination to prevent others from experiencing similar loss through her advocacy. Notably, during heated debates over gun control, McCarthy often became emotionally moved, reinforcing her commitment to the cause.

Carving her path from a politically inexperienced individual to a congresswoman, her unexpected victory in 1996 inspired a biopic produced by Barbra Streisand. Despite criticism of being labeled a one-issue lawmaker, she contested that her interests extended to healthcare and education. Ultimately, she accepted that gun control would define her legacy, a testament to her life’s mission stemming from profound personal tragedy.
