St. Louis Residents Urged to Observe Fireworks Regulations This Independence Day
ST. LOUIS — With 86% of Americans preparing to celebrate Independence Day, the use of fireworks has become a prominent aspect of the festivities. However, local regulations in Missouri and Illinois present important nuances that residents must respect.
In Missouri, fireworks can be sold from June 20 to July 10, but St. Louis residents should be aware that setting them off within city limits is illegal, as emphasized by Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson, who highlighted the inherent dangers of consumer fireworks. St. Louis County also mandates a permit for fireworks displays, obtained ten days in advance.
In nearby St. Charles County, fireworks regulations vary by municipality, with specific hours designated for usage. St. Peters prohibits fireworks entirely, while St. Charles City allows them from noon to 11 p.m. on July 3-4, with supervision requirements for younger users.
Franklin and Jefferson Counties present a patchwork of rules as well. In Arnold, fireworks can only be used from noon to 10 p.m. until July 5, while in De Soto, any fireworks usage requires a permit.
Conversely, in Illinois, only non-aerial and non-explosive novelty items are permitted, leaving out firecrackers and bottle rockets completely.
As safety remains paramount, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises caution, highlighting that fireworks injuries soared last year, with over 14,700 emergency room visits. Residents are urged to ensure compliance with local laws and prioritize safety when celebrating.
