Comcast Expands Internet Access in Rural Miami County, Kansas
PAOLA, Kan. — Community leaders in Miami County celebrated the completion of Comcast’s two-year broadband infrastructure project on Monday. The initiative, fully funded by Comcast, provides high-speed internet and television services to 4,000 homes and businesses in rural Paola and Hillsdale.
Jennifer Dameron, Comcast’s director of external affairs for the Midwest, emphasized the essential nature of internet access today, stating, “Most people would agree that internet is no longer just a luxury.” Previously, the county relied on a single internet provider with limited services.
Janet McRae, Miami County Economic Development Director, highlighted how this expansion connects unincorporated areas of the community to reliable internet, which is vital in today’s digital age. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the internet accessibility gap in rural areas, making online services for healthcare and other essential needs out of reach for many residents.
Moreover, the expansion complements local initiatives like My Father’s House, a shelter developing a Tiny Home community to address affordable housing shortages. Co-founder Beth Waddle underscored the importance of internet access in aiding residents’ journeys towards independence, noting its relevance in job applications and educational resources.
In a show of support, Comcast presented a $2,500 donation to My Father’s House to help strengthen community ties. This broadband initiative is part of Comcast’s broader commitment to expand high-speed internet access in rural regions, with plans for additional projects in nearby communities.
