Press Release: St. Louis County Libraries Partner with American Heart Association to Promote Health
St. Louis County libraries are joining forces with the American Heart Association (AHA) to improve community health through an innovative initiative. The "Libraries at Heart" program will provide 100 blood pressure kits for checkout at various library branches, equipping residents with the tools to monitor their blood pressure effectively. Each kit includes a blood pressure cuff, instructional materials, a health tracking sheet, and guidance on managing blood pressure.
Cidney Grimes, community impact manager for the AHA’s Missouri Chapter, emphasized the libraries’ trusted position in the community, stating, "The library is a great place to meet people where they are." The kits can be used onsite or checked out for home use, focusing on public health awareness amid rising hypertension rates—affecting nearly half of U.S. adults.
Grimes shared invaluable monitoring tips, advising individuals to take two readings at least one minute apart in a calm, proper posture. Alarmingly, disparities exist: approximately 56% of Black adults suffer from high blood pressure compared to 39% of Hispanic adults.
Supported by corporate sponsor Edward Jones, this initiative aims to empower individuals to take charge of their health. As high blood pressure can lead to serious health complications such as heart attacks and strokes, the program serves as a vital resource for the community.
