Missouri Set for Sports Betting Rollout Amid Regulatory Concerns
Missouri is gearing up to legalize sports betting, although it won’t be ready by the start of the football season this year. This delay follows Secretary of State Denny Hoskins’ rejection of the Missouri Gaming Commission’s emergency rules aimed at expediting the licensing process. Hoskins emphasized the need for a thorough public input and review process to ensure transparency for Missourians.
Despite this, the commission’s chair, Jan Zimmerman, confirmed that the timeline remains on track to meet a Dec. 1, 2025 deadline set by voters last year. License applications are now open, with "untethered" licenses expected to be issued in August and other licenses in November. The anticipated annual tax revenue from sports betting stands at around $28 million, with funds earmarked for educational purposes and the newly established Compulsive Gaming Prevention Fund.
This fund is designed to provide resources for compulsive gambling counseling and prevention efforts, highlighting growing concerns about gambling addiction. As sports betting increasingly moves online, experts warn that the risk of addiction may rise, particularly among young men. Kansas City Port Authority’s Keith Spare noted, “With online gambling accessible day and night, we’re potentially igniting deeper issues.”
While nine agencies offer free counseling for gambling disorders, demand is surging, leaving many services stretched thin. Experts are advocating for more trained counselors and a more robust outreach campaign to raise awareness of gambling addiction, paralleling successful models in neighboring states like Kansas and Oklahoma.
As Missouri prepares to launch sports betting, the focus remains on protecting citizens and ensuring responsible measures to address the looming challenges of gambling addiction in an evolving landscape.
