Columbia Moves Forward with Recycling Facility Plans, Seeks Community Input
Columbia, MO – The city of Columbia is making strides toward rebuilding its recycling program with plans for a new Material Recovery Facility (MRF), following the destruction of the previous facility by a tornado this past Easter Sunday. Demolition of the damaged structure began in May and is expected to wrap up by the end of June.
In an effort to engage the community, Columbia Utilities has launched the BeHeard website, featuring a survey aimed at garnering public feedback on the future of recycling in the city. The site includes various rebuilding options presented to the City Council earlier this month, allowing residents to contribute their thoughts directly.
Since the tornado, recycling operations have been halted, forcing all recyclable materials to be sent to the landfill—a temporary solution that highlights the urgent need for community input. The city is also planning a series of community engagement events to facilitate in-person discussions and gather further comments from residents.
Columbia officials stress the importance of resident participation in shaping the future of recycling in the city. The survey can be accessed on the city’s BeHeard website, paving the way for a collaborative approach to rebuilding the vital recycling infrastructure.
Residents are encouraged to share their insights and contribute to the revitalization of Columbia’s recycling efforts.
