Kennedy Jr.’s controversial overhaul of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)—replacing all 17 members with eight new appointees who have expressed skepticism about vaccines—independent medical organizations are seeking unbiased alternatives. Furthermore, state health departments are pushing back against changes in vaccine recommendations, asserting that alterations were not based on sound scientific evidence.
ACIP, established in 1972, is composed of experts who scrutinize vaccines and recommend practices based on evidence. However, with the absence of a CDC director until a new appointee is confirmed, Kennedy’s authority allows him to override traditional processes, as he recently did concerning COVID-19 vaccine recommendations for healthy children.
