Missouri Dairy’s Summer Social Connects Producers for Growth
On June 5, Twin Knobs Dairy in Vanzant, Missouri, hosted the fifth annual Summer Social by Missouri Dairy, aimed at fostering connections within the dairy community. Approximately 100 attendees, including Missouri Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn, celebrated the announcement of June Dairy Month at this gathering, organized in partnership with the University of Missouri Extension.
The event spotlighted Twin Knobs Dairy, operated by fourth-generation farmers Erin and Kaleb Rodgers, who collaborated with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to enhance their dairy farm’s environmental sustainability. After securing approval in 2021 for a new pack barn facility, the Rodgers improved housing conditions for their cattle, addressing issues like soil erosion and nutrient loss from manure, as explained by MU Extension dairy specialist Reagan Bluel. The NRCS provided cost-sharing support, demonstrating a successful public-private partnership aimed at enhancing both productivity and environmental stewardship.
Missouri Dairy’s initiatives, such as the Summer Social and the Missouri Dairy Expo, promote education and networking among dairy farmers. Bluel emphasized the importance of these gatherings for sharing innovative ideas and fostering collaboration, which can lead to improved practices within the industry. As the Missouri dairy sector looks to grow, events like these play a crucial role in ensuring that producers can learn from one another and stay at the forefront of agricultural innovations.
