Missouri Governor Eliminates DEI Programs in State Government
Jefferson City, MO – Governor Mike Kehoe signed an executive order on Tuesday that abolishes diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs across Missouri’s state government. The order prohibits the allocation of state funds to these initiatives and bars government agencies from factoring DEI in hiring practices. Additionally, state agencies are mandated to review their existing programs and policies within 90 days to ensure alignment with the executive order.
Kehoe has been vocal against DEI programs, articulating his stance during his State of the State address in January. In a follow-up interview with St. Louis Public Radio, he emphasized his desire to establish "an even playing field" for all citizens, asserting that hard work should be the primary criterion for success in state employment.
Despite the elimination of DEI programs, Kehoe suggested that this decision would not impede state agencies from engaging in community outreach and collaboration with diverse groups. "I don’t believe that this will interfere with what they need to do," he stated, indicating a commitment to maintaining connections with various communities.
The governor’s executive order reinforces the constitutional principle of equal treatment under the law while ensuring the continuation of state laws that prohibit discrimination. This move is reminiscent of similar actions taken by former President Donald Trump, whose own DEI initiative is currently facing legal challenges.
As the effects of this decision unfold, it remains to be seen how it will impact state workforce diversity and engagement with the communities that Missouri serves. Kehoe’s administration aims for a renewed focus on merit-based hiring and performance without the influence of DEI considerations.
