Press Release: Road Rage Shooting Claims Life of Former Sports Reporter in Missouri
On January 10, a tragic road rage incident on I-29 resulted in the death of Dennis Sharkey Jr., a 50-year-old former sports reporter. The suspect, Ruslan Huseynov, 34, has since been arrested and charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon.
Witnesses reported to the Kansas City Police Department that they observed both vehicles come to a stop before seeing Huseynov exit his car brandishing a firearm. As the witnesses continued past, they heard a gunshot, prompting them to contact authorities. First responders found Sharkey’s vehicle crashed into a fence; he had suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital.
Investigation efforts revealed that Huseynov’s cellphone was in the vicinity during the incident. A search of his residence uncovered a 9mm handgun, ammunition, and matching shell casings. Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd indicated that, despite evidence pointing to road rage, the precise events leading up to the shooting remain unclear.
Sharkey, a journalism graduate from Northwest Missouri State University in 2006, made significant contributions to sports reporting across Missouri and Kansas. His recent work included covering sports for the Platte County Citizen and creating the Northland Buzz, which focused on sports in the North Kansas City School District. Following his death, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated to support his mother.
Huseynov is currently held at the Platte County Detention Center without bond, as the investigation continues. The community mourns the loss of Sharkey, remembered not only for his career but also for his dedication to sports journalism.
