Local Beef Farmer Embraces Virtual Fencing Technology
LARCHWOOD, IA – Karl Palmberg, the owner of Sunlight and Rain Grass Fed Beef, has adopted innovative virtual fencing technology to enhance his cattle farming practices. Having monitored advancements in the technology for nearly a decade, Palmberg recently opted for the Gallagher e-Shepherd system, which integrates GPS and cellular connectivity for efficient pasture management.
The system relies on collars placed around the cattle’s necks, delivering audible tones and mild shocks to keep the animals within designated boundaries. Palmberg sets these virtual fences from his computer, efficiently completing a day’s worth of fencing in less than a minute. The collar’s lithium-ion battery connects to a cellular network every ten minutes to update its geofence, ensuring the cattle remain within safe grazing areas.
This technology is a significant asset for Palmberg’s grass-fed beef operation, allowing for rotational grazing that enhances the nutrient quality of the meat. “After just a couple of weeks, I can’t imagine raising cattle without this technology,” he stated, expressing confidence that virtual fencing will proliferate in the industry as it becomes more accessible.
However, Palmberg acknowledges that virtual fencing isn’t suitable for everyone. He advises that while it’s beneficial for intensive rotational grazing and regenerative agriculture, less dedicated operations may find it less worthwhile. Despite some initial challenges in training the cattle to adapt to their new collars, Palmberg reports a smooth transition, allowing him more flexibility in his personal life.
“I can now take vacations with my family without worrying about my cows,” he shared, illustrating the work-life balance enhanced by this technology. As Palmberg’s experience suggests, virtual fencing is poised to revolutionize the way cattle farming is conducted in the region.
