Severe Storms Cause Damage Across Kansas City Area
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City area experienced significant disruptions on Tuesday afternoon due to a powerful line of severe storms, leaving over 12,000 customers without power, primarily in Missouri. Eastern Independence and Raytown were among the hardest-hit regions.
Residents of Independence recounted moments of terror as the storms unleashed their fury. Reports emerged of numerous trees falling throughout the area. One such incident saw a large tree on Trail Ridge Road crash onto a house, although the occupant was away and unharmed. Neighborhoods, particularly along Highland Avenue, faced prolonged power outages and substantial damage.
Local resident Don McMillan narrowly escaped serious damage when a tree split and fell just feet from his home. “I looked out to see what the weather was doing, and that’s when it all hit,” McMillan said, expressing relief that his car was parked safely away from the tree’s path. However, his neighbor, Cesar Antonio, was not as fortunate. A massive tree uprooted and landed on his roof, creating a terrifying moment for his family. “We didn’t have a shelter,” Antonio shared, noting the tension felt by his family during the storm.
Although many neighborhoods remained in darkness, community solidarity prevailed as residents lent support to one another. “I’m very thankful,” McMillan stated, appreciating the safety of his family and neighbors.
The storm also impacted operations at the Truman Sports Complex, where employees took shelter inside Kauffman Stadium as winds and rain intensified. Despite the chaos, both Kauffman and Arrowhead Stadiums reported no significant damage.
Independence public works crews were deployed to assess the damage and assist affected residents as the community began to recover from the severe weather event.
