Rep. LaMonica McIver, a Democratic lawmaker from New Jersey, was indicted on three federal charges for allegedly interfering with law enforcement during a confrontation at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Newark last month. Interim U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, Alina Habba, stated that McIver’s actions were a danger to both law enforcement and the communities they serve, emphasizing the importance of expressing views on policies in a safe manner.
In response to the indictment, McIver characterized the legal actions against her as “a brazen attempt at political intimidation” and asserted her intention to plead not guilty. She maintained that she was performing her duties as an elected official and claimed that the indictment was part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to evade accountability for the actions of ICE and to intimidate her into refraining from doing her job.
This indictment follows charges filed by the Justice Department three weeks prior, which alleged that McIver had assaulted law enforcement at the ICE facility. As the story develops, further updates will be provided. Raquel Coronell Uribe contributed to the report, with Emma Caughlan assisting as a reporter covering breaking news.
