California Governor Gavin Newsom Remains Unbothered by Arrest Threats from Trump Administration Official

California Governor Gavin Newsom has defiantly responded to threats from Trump administration officials regarding immigration raids and protests in Los Angeles. Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, warned that federal immigration operations would continue, threatening arrest for anyone obstructing these efforts, including Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, although he acknowledged neither had yet “crossed the line.” In a heated exchange, Newsom challenged Homan to follow through with the arrests, dismissing his threats as empty bluster.

Bass echoed this sentiment, criticizing Homan’s comments as unnecessary. She specified that while she opposed the deployment of National Guard troops to the city, she had no intention of escalating conflict with the federal government. Trump supported Homan’s stance, stating that officials obstructing law enforcement would face consequences. However, Newsom noted that during a recent call with Trump, the President did not express concern regarding the protests or the involvement of National Guard troops, highlighting that the topic was not mentioned during their discussion.

Both Newsom and Bass have expressed strong opposition to Trump’s decision to send at least 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, arguing that this would heighten existing tensions related to the immigration raids. In a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Newsom requested the rescinding of the federal order to deploy the troops, stating that state and local authorities are best suited to evaluate resource needs in such dynamic situations.

Amidst escalating tensions, threats of arrest have marked Trump’s second term, particularly following a notable incident involving Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, whose charges were eventually dropped.
