Viskari Shines in Missouri Amateur Qualifier with Historic Round
O’Fallon, Missouri – Missouri men’s golfer Veikka Viskari delivered an unforgettable performance at the Missouri Amateur Qualifier, shooting an impressive 7-under 64 at The Falls Golf Club on Thursday. The sophomore from Espoo, Finland, not only secured his spot in the upcoming Missouri Amateur Championship but also made golf history with an exceptional albatross on the challenging par-five sixth hole.
Viskari began his round with a mix of excitement and nerves, recording two birdies and two bogeys in the first five holes. After a bogey on the eighth, he pulled together to finish the front nine at 3-under 33, before showcasing his remarkable skills with a bogey-free back nine that included four additional birdies. His stellar performance proved crucial, as he edged out Fenton’s David Strickland, who finished just one shot behind at 65.
The albatross, a rare achievement that requires a player to score three strokes under par on a hole, is said to be significantly rarer than a hole-in-one. The PGA estimates the odds of making an albatross at a staggering 6 million-to-1, underscoring the significance of Viskari’s accomplishment.
Viskari was among the 33 qualifiers from the O’Fallon site set to compete at the Missouri Amateur Championship, scheduled for June 24-29 at The Club at Old Hawthorne. He joins teammate Brock Snyder, who qualified with a 2-under 70 in a separate qualifier, while Columbia native Andrew Fallis also earned a spot, shooting an even-par 72.
Viskari’s triumphant qualifier caps off a standout season after transferring from VCU, reflecting his growing prowess in collegiate golf.
