Ex-Missouri Political Candidate Donates Kidney

St. Louis Soldier’s Life-Saving Gift: A Kidney Donation to a Comrade

BETHESDA, Md. – Maj. Mark Osmack, a St. Louis native and veteran who completed two tours in Afghanistan, has made headlines for a remarkable act of friendship. Following his unsuccessful bid for Missouri state treasurer last November, Osmack learned that his friend, Lt. Col. Brian Lilly, was facing severe health challenges, including stage five renal failure.

After a conversation with Lilly, who was preparing to move to Walter Reed Medical Center for recovery, Osmack felt compelled to help. "I wish I had more than one kidney because I would do this again in a heartbeat," he stated.

With determination and extensive research, Osmack offered one of his kidneys, describing Lilly as “a great man” deserving of support. The successful transplant took place on May 22nd, with Osmack recovering quickly after the surgery. In contrast, Lilly faces a longer road ahead, requiring additional procedures but showing optimism for the future.

In a testament to resilience, Osmack plans to participate in the Marine Corps Marathon this fall to demonstrate that major organ donation doesn’t preclude engaging in challenging activities. "Five months later, you can do a marathon and do something hard," he emphasized.

Looking ahead, Osmack is also considering donating part of his liver, underlining his commitment to helping others in need. His selfless choices highlight the bonds forged in service and the profound impact of camaraderie.
