Mizzou Track and Field Athletes Recognized for Community Service

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri track and field program proudly announces that senior thrower Tarique George and freshman heptathlete Brooke Sawatzky have been honored with spots on the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Community Service Team, as announced by the league office on Thursday.

Tarique George, hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, dedicated an impressive 53 hours to volunteer work with local food banks in Columbia, making a significant impact in the community. Beyond his community service, George has been a vital asset to Mizzou’s track team, contributing to the nationally ranked discus squad, which finished the season as the No. 6 team in the country. Personally, George secured a noteworthy position, ranking 10th in the SEC and 40th nationally in the discus event. He concluded his collegiate career with a personal-best throw of 57.97m (190-2) at the NCAA Championships on May 31.

Freshman Brooke Sawatzky, a Naperville, Illinois native, showcased her commitment to community service by logging 63 hours while balancing a rigorous academic and athletic schedule. Throughout the year, Sawatzky volunteered at various local organizations, including the Bluff Retirement Home, Special Olympics, and a local children’s hospital. In her debut season, she excelled at the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, achieving personal bests in high jump (1.50m/4-11) and 100m hurdles (15.03).

As the Mizzou track team gears up for the NCAA Championship Finals at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, from June 11-14, fans will look to cheer on athletes like Valentina Barrios, Alicia Burnett, Skylar Coffey, and others as they compete for national titles in their events.
