MoDOT Urges Caution as Memorial Day Weekend Approaches Amid Record Construction
As Memorial Day weekend nears, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is urging motorists to exercise heightened caution, anticipating the busiest road construction season in the state’s history. With an unprecedented number of work zones across Missouri’s highways, the agency is emphasizing the need for drivers to plan ahead and stay alert.
The warning comes as holiday traffic typically surges, often leading to a spike in accidents. In 2024 alone, this period saw 10 fatalities and 83 serious injuries on Missouri roads. To enhance safety, MoDOT is reminding drivers to adopt essential safety habits, including wearing seat belts, avoiding distractions such as cell phones, driving sober, and adhering to speed limits, particularly in work zones.
Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about road conditions by using MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map at traveler.modot.org, which offers real-time updates on closures and delays. Notably, several major work zones with permanent lane closures will still be active throughout the holiday weekend, adding to the importance of vigilance on the road.
As the holiday approaches, MoDOT stresses that responsible driving behaviors can significantly reduce the risks associated with increased traffic and ongoing construction.
