Severe Thunderstorm Threat Diminishes for Kansas City; Weather Alerts Update

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As the sun sets on Monday, Kansas City remains under a First Alert Weather Alert Day, with severe thunderstorms moving through the area. The National Weather Service (NWS) originally issued a tornado watch but allowed it to expire around 10:25 PM. The storm system prompted multiple severe thunderstorm warnings and confirmed tornadoes earlier in the day, with damaging winds reported in Brookside’s Wornall Homestead neighborhood.

Throughout the day, severe thunderstorms produced high winds, quarter-sized hail, and flash flooding, impacting numerous counties in both Missouri and Kansas. Current warnings are set to continue until 9:30 PM, primarily affecting northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri, including counties like Buchanan, Clay, and Platte.

Meteorologists reported that while storm intensity is decreasing and coverage is expected to become more spotty, lingering rain and minor storm conditions could persist into the early morning hours. A timeline indicates that while the risks diminish overnight, areas may still experience travel hazards, including fog and drizzle.

Looking ahead, the forecast shows a return to dryer conditions later in the week, with the next potential for thunderstorms appearing next week. Residents are urged to remain prepared with alert systems like the KMBC 9 News app and NOAA Weather Radio for any updates on evolving weather conditions. Stay safe and monitor local weather communications.
