Severe Storms Hit Mid-Missouri: Tornado Warnings and Power Outages Reported
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ) — An intense storm system swept through Mid-Missouri on Monday evening, prompting warnings from the National Weather Service, including a tornado warning for Benton and Pettis counties that expired at 8:15 p.m.
Benton County experienced significant power outages, leaving 4,644 customers without electricity, according to the Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives. This includes 2,028 Central Missouri Electric Cooperative customers, among others. Pettis County reported 425 Central Missouri Electric customers affected, and its emergency management agency opened tornado shelters for residents.
Morgan County faced similar challenges, with 306 Co-Mo Electric customers and 291 Ameren customers losing power. Emergency management reported storm damage, including downed trees and a house fire caused by a lightning strike near Versailles. Additional outages occurred in Cole, Camden, and Moniteau counties, affecting hundreds more.
In Columbia, outages began affecting around 120 Water and Light customers in a neighborhood near Green Meadows Road shortly after 9 p.m. By 10:17 p.m., Boone Electric reported a peak of 344 outages, which fluctuated as storm conditions persisted, including tree incidents obstructing roads.
As the region remained under a tornado watch until 3 a.m., the situation highlighted the need for vigilance amid ongoing severe weather. Utility companies and emergency services continue to monitor the conditions and address power restoration efforts.
