Passenger Jet Aborts Takeoff to Prevent Runway Collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport

On May 6, a Republic Airways jet at New York’s LaGuardia Airport had to abort takeoff after nearly colliding with a United Airlines plane on the runway. Passenger Renee Hoffer experienced severe neck pain and arm numbness as the sudden stop felt akin to a car accident. Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident, which occurred despite LaGuardia being equipped with an advanced radar system designed to prevent such occurrences.

The air traffic controller mistakenly believed the United plane had cleared the runway, but it was still taxiing when the Republic jet began its takeoff. Hoffer noted that after the incident, gate agents denied passengers hotel vouchers, attributing the situation to weather conditions, despite passenger claims about the presence of another plane.

Hoffer’s subsequent attempts to get a response from the airlines and FAA regarding her complaints have been unsuccessful, leaving her frustrated as she deals with medical issues. The incident highlights growing safety concerns; close calls have increased in recent years, including a notable one in Austin earlier in 2023.

Though LaGuardia is one of only 35 airports equipped with advanced technology to track ground traffic, unsafe situations continue to occur. Current efforts to enhance safety include plans for additional systems at LaGuardia and a proposed overhaul of the air traffic control system. However, achieving perfect safety remains a challenge, as the rate of serious runway incursions has spiked to 22 incidents in 2023. Past tragedies, such as the Tenerife disaster in 1977—where 583 people died when two planes collided—underscore the critical need for improved aviation safety.
