St. Luke’s Elmore Introduces 3D Mammography to Enhance Breast Cancer Screening in Rural Idaho
MOUNTAIN HOME, Idaho — St. Luke’s Elmore is revolutionizing breast cancer detection with the introduction of 3D mammography technology. This state-of-the-art mobile unit will service Mountain Home during the first week of each month, subsequently traveling to various locations in the Magic Valley to improve access for residents in underserved rural areas.
Lori Bott, a breast cancer survivor and member of the St. Luke’s Foundation board, shared her personal experience with early detection through 3D mammography. Diagnosed two and a half years ago, Bott attributed her survival to the technology’s ability to identify her 1.1 cm tumor amidst her dense breast tissue. Thanks to early intervention, she was able to avoid more aggressive treatments such as chemotherapy.
The new technology aims to combat delays in care often associated with travel challenges faced by rural residents. “Now they can get it right here,” Bott remarked, highlighting the significant impact this service will have on local communities. “It’s huge; it’s going to save lives.”
In addition to the mammography services, St. Luke’s Elmore is also expanding cardiac care by incorporating more echo ultrasound machines for diagnosing heart diseases, addressing a crucial healthcare gap in the region. Lisa Melchiorre, COO and Chief Nursing Officer, emphasized the importance of routine screenings, encouraging residents not to postpone necessary health checks.
These advancements underscore St. Luke’s commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and detection capabilities for the residents of Mountain Home and surrounding areas, ultimately aiming to improve health outcomes in the region.
