China Pavilion Unveils "CO-EXIST" at Venice Architecture Biennale
Venice, Italy – The China Pavilion, curated by MAD’s Ma Yansong, opened its doors on May 10, 2025, at the esteemed Arsenale during the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. Titled "CO-EXIST," the pavilion explores the evolving interplay between ancient Chinese philosophy and contemporary technology amidst the shift from industrial civilization to the intelligent age.
The grand opening was attended by notable dignitaries, including Venice’s Deputy Mayor Massimiliano de Martin, Chinese Ambassador to Italy Jia Guide, and various architects showcasing their innovative designs. Ma Yansong expressed hopes that the exhibition would serve as a catalyst for discussions surrounding traditional Chinese culture, modernity, and future visions.
Featuring a collective of emerging Chinese architects, the pavilion adopts a "one place, one solution" philosophy, challenging conventional urban development while intertwining modernity with Eastern traditions. Key exhibits include "12 Rhythms in Liangzhu," which audibly bridges ancient rituals with futuristic concepts, and "Concrete Spolia," an installation utilizing recycled Venetian construction waste to highlight sustainability.
Other notable works include "Spring, Along Beijing Central Axis," a video installation mapping significant historical sites in Beijing, and "Vault of Heaven," which reinterprets ancient well structures as modern art. Each exhibit not only showcases architectural ingenuity but also sparks dialogues on ecological challenges and urban redevelopment.
The pavilion’s overarching theme is to embody a diverse, emotionally rich era while sharing Chinese wisdom globally. CO-EXIST will be open to the public until November 23, 2025, and promises to offer a profound exploration of the intersections of time, culture, and design.
