Bocce the Therapy Dog Brightens Lives at John J. Pershing VA Medical Center
POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (WSIL) — A four-year-old Labrador retriever named Bocce has become a cherished presence at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center, where she regularly visits the Community Living Center unit. As a certified therapy dog, Bocce has brought joy to nursing home residents and staff alike since the therapy program commenced two years ago.
Gabe Thompson, Bocce’s handler and a school counselor in Poplar Bluff, noted the significant impact of these visits. “Patients really enjoy her, and the staff looks forward to seeing her,” he stated. For many residents, Bocce’s arrival is a key highlight of their week, with some making an effort to be present for her visits.
The importance of Bocce’s interactions goes beyond mere entertainment. Samantha Parsley, a recreation therapist at the center, highlighted how Bocce’s presence provides comfort and social stimulation. “Even getting that tactile aspect is very important for our residents,” she explained.
Thompson also encourages conversations between residents, allowing them to share stories about their own pets, fostering connections that might not occur otherwise. Both residents and staff feel uplifted by Bocce’s visits, contributing to a positive atmosphere on the unit.
While summer may affect visitation frequency, Thompson assured that Bocce will continue her meaningful visits. “As long as they’ll have us, we’ll keep coming,” he affirmed.
