Missouri State Tops Indiana State in Series Opener
SPRINGFIELD, ILL. – Missouri State fought off an Indiana State rally to secure a 6-3 victory in the first game of their weekend series at Hammons Field on Friday night.
The game saw Indiana State (22-27, 10-12) initially trailing 2-1 before launching a seventh-inning comeback, sparked by Jorge Cartagena’s lead-off single and Jackson Taylor’s full-count walk. A bases-loaded situation led to Carter Beck’s two-run single, giving the Sycamores a brief 3-2 lead.
However, Missouri State (26-21, 16-6) responded decisively in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Caden Bogenpohl and Nick Rodriguez both walked before Jake McCutcheon and Taeg Gollert delivered back-to-back RBI singles, pushing the Bears ahead at 4-3.
Rodriguez later sealed the game with a two-run home run in the eighth inning. The Bears had a strong offensive outing, finishing with 10 hits, including multi-hit performances from Rodriguez, McCutcheon, Gollert, and Knight.
Pitcher Breyllin Suriel threw six innings for Indiana State, allowing seven hits and two runs. Missouri State’s Jason Schaaf matched with six innings of work, while relief pitcher Knight closed the game with three hitless innings.
With this victory, Missouri State aims to build on their momentum as they face Indiana State again Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Fans can catch the action live on 105.5 The Legend. For more updates on Sycamore baseball, visit GoSycamores.com.
